The Wonderful Fantastic Magaret Mahy Playground by Miriana

W.A.L.T. write descriptive accurate sentences using full stops and capitals.

The whole of Sockburn School explored the equipment to see what we would like at our new school.

One piece of the equipment that I didn’t like I loved was the two flying foxes. I  liked them because it was fun to have a race with other people. The flying foxes are on this biggish smallish hill. The hill has fake grass on it. So you go up the hill and wait in line. Then when it's your turn you hop on and go. When you go on it there is light bark and when you get to the end, there are these tyres ,and when you hit the tyres the flying fox will swing so you need to hold on tight. There are poles and thick strong wires holding the trers up. When you hit the tryres there is also a little hill there just incase you want to get off there. The flying foxes are orange and gray. It’s awesome!

Another one that I loved is  the GIANT slide. The slide was made out of metal and luckily it has rails on the side of it to stop people from falling off. The slide is made out of metal and sometimes metal slides hurt. I think we should have the slide because it fits at least five or six people on at a time. To get up to the slide there are these little whale things that you hold onto so you could get up. It was fantastic going down the slide. I didn’t have to hold onto the little whale things because I could get up almost without hands! Mrs Boswell fell down the hill when we were at the playground and it was kind of funny.

The lucky last thing that I loved was the seesaw there. But when the seesaw goes down it hurts because the thing that it hits is very hard. But it only hurts sometimes. The seesaw could fit four people on it because it had two seats joint together on one side and then two seats joint together on the other side. I think we should have it because then four people can go at a time. I went on the seesaw with Adelaide, Maggie and Isla. It was super fun.

Just Like Everyone Else by Miriana

Knowledge:What are the three main Maori words that are used in the story and what do these mean? ( write in your own words.

  1. Hangi: Means a pit in which food is cooked on heated stones
  2. Marae: Is the courtyard of a Maori meeting house.
  3. Powhiri: Is a welcome ceremony on a marae.
Comprehension:Describe how you think learning and life at school is for Zoe. Summarise your ideas into a paragraph using at least 6 sentences.

I think that life for Zoe at school could be a struggle sometimes because she can’t hear so it must be at least a little bit hard. The reason that I think it is hard is because some people who are deaf find it really hard but I kind of think that Zoe can handle it. She looks like she’s having lots of fun in the book and so I think she doing really well. Zoe is just like everyone else.

Application:What questions would you ask Zoe if you got to interview her?

I would ask her how it feels to be deaf. I would also like to ask her nicely if she could teach me some sign language.
